More and more grandparents have taken a larger role in rearing their grandchildren.  In situations where parents are unable to take care of children, grandparents often provide a stable, familiar environment and income to raise the child.

“Grandparent custody often starts out informally,” said attorney Stephen Blythe.  “After a while, the grandparents realize they can’t obtain dependent health coverage for the grandchild unless they have legal custody.  Depending on the age of the grandparents, there may also be Social Security income benefits for the child, depending on the circumstances.”
